Making Something out of Nothing

At the Protecting Courage Podcast this month our September series is focused on “Something From Nothing” and as the weeks go by I have been thinking deeper about what that really means to me. I am asking myself how I have made something from nothing in my life and I found that my answers might surprise you so I thought I would share it with you today.

As you know, my definition of Innovation is, “creating something that didn’t exist before. I am on a mission to redefine the word innovation. I don’t think it belongs to just Silicon Valley and millionaire tech startup founders. I know that we all have the power to create something that wasn’t there before, and that, in my opinion, is the real definition of innovation.

I no longer believe that creativity is something you have or you don’t have. I have found that we all have the power to create something from nothing in our own unique way.

Making something from nothing requires original thought.

It requires authenticity and humility.

It requires a slower pace and deep thought.

We hear over and over that entrepreneurship and innovation are solutions to problems but my observation this month has been that it doesn’t always have to be a solution to a particular business problem. These solutions can be personal and or even a solution to a systemic social problem.

The secret is, defining how you are solving that problem in your own unique way.

For example, in my personal opinion, our society is celebrating all of the wrong things. All too often we are celebrating ego, narcissism, and the win at all cost mentality. We have somehow lost the value of community, deep conversation, and empathy. We have lost the understanding of how powerful listening to another human being can be… and I don’t mean listening while multitasking or listening to a keynote speaker at a conference.

I mean really listening to their story, their fears, their raw emotion, and determination to keep going.

So instead of just ranting about my personal opinion on social media every day, I decided to start the Protecting Courage Podcast. I wanted to elevate people and their acts of courage. I wanted to create a platform for people to really listen to someone’s fear, raw emotion, and determination to keep going.

I want to showcase the real human experience of what courage can look like in different scenarios, cultures, countries, races, gender, sexual orientation, and social classes.

Thanks to Google and many before me, I was able to figure out how to start and successfully launch a podcast but I wasn’t expecting what happened next. The show started to bleed over into other areas of my life. I started to see courage in not just the guests but everyone I encountered on a daily basis. It was like I had been awakened to an entirely new perspective. I thought I was building this for you but yet I was the one who needed it the most.

What a gift.

A true blessing.

I get to walk around and see tiny acts of courage in everyone around me. I get to see how people are making something out of nothing- truly innovating on a daily basis. Things like family values, new business ideas, books, and even new ways of doing things as simple as raising a family, making dinner, going to school, fighting their demons, and taking care of their mental health.

These conversations have left me humbled and optimistic about the future. I know things feel hard today but the truth is that we are evolving as human beings right before our own eyes. No one is nailing it and no one is crushing it. We are in uncharted territory and we must lean on each as we show up imperfectly. Now more than ever we must look at each other without the superior mindset and find ways to make something from nothing for not only ourselves but for everyone after us.

How are you making something from nothing in your life today?

Are you breaking generational trauma or dysfunctional behavior? Are you going all-in on something that has been calling you to take action on for years? Are you slowing down and focusing on making dinner for your family every night? Are you doing all three?

No matter what, I want to hear from you. Comment below, the comment section of where you are reading this or send me an email at to tell me more. I think we can help each other by just listening to each other.

What are you waiting for?

Do it now.
